The American Fraternal Alliance is pleased to introduce a brand new educational offering designed to develop both volunteer leaders and fraternal staff. This program, led by an expert in not-for-profit volunteer leadership development and management, will provide you and your volunteer leaders with in-depth information that will allow you to:

  • Learn how to work with society leadership to align fraternal activities with mission and home office budgeting process
  • Understand the role of volunteer management in fraternal benefit society chapters
  • Develop a process of recruiting, engaging, and utilizing volunteers
  • Learn how to use technology when communicating with volunteers, planning events, etc.
  • Example of one key takeaway:
    • Create, plan, and implement a new volunteer chapter event or series of events in 2015 that will engage a desired number of members, nonmembers, and agents.

Faculty Bio

Dr. Alicia Schatteman
Assistant Professor
Northern Illinois University
Division of Public Administration

Professor Schatteman is an Assistant Professor of Nonprofit Management in the Division of Public Administration and Department of Political Science at Northern Illinois University.  She received her Bachelor of Social Science degree in Public Administration from the University of Ottawa and a Master of Arts degree in Canadian Studies from Trent University, both in her native country of Canada.

After working for over 10 years in the government and nonprofit sectors, she received a Master of Science degree in Communications Management from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University and Ph.D. in Public Administration from Rutgers University.  Prior to joining the faculty at NIU in the fall of 2010, she taught at Kean University, Rutgers University and John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City.  Her research and teaching interests are nonprofit management, public administration, public communications and electronic government.
